This summer we decided to visit Portugal.<\/span>\u00a0There are so many beautiful things to see there… Although in this post I will focus on its most representative neighborhoods.<\/span>\u00a0Some of our friends had already traveled to the Portuguese capital and they all said that we would love it.<\/span>\u00a0“Lisbon is very beautiful and there are great places to eat,” was the phrase we heard most.<\/span>\u00a0What they forgot to say is the amount of slopes that it has, as well as the curious pavement floor that characterizes its most emblematic areas, but that shatters anyone’s feet.<\/span>\u00a0I have to say it is worth suffering because the place is wonderful.<\/span>\u00a0Luckily, I checked before I packed my suitcase, and I came to the conclusion that this time my heels had to stay at home.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Mosaico<\/a>
Portuguese Pavement.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

This land, known as “Portuguese pavement”, has its origins in 1755. After an earthquake devastated the city, the Marquis of Pombal, the prime minister of King Jose I of Portugal, “the Reformer”, ordered the reconstruction of the road with the rubble which had left the catastrophe.<\/span>\u00a0Today you can enjoy the beautiful mosaics that cobblestones form throughout the old part of the capital<\/span>.<\/p>\n

La Baixa<\/h2>\n

Lisbon downtown: commercial area. I<\/span>t starts at\u00a0Pra\u00e7a dos Restauradores<\/i>\u00a0(\u00a0Restauradores<\/i>\u00a0Square) and ends at the impressive\u00a0Pra\u00e7a do Com\u00e9rcio<\/i>\u00a0(Commerce Square).<\/span>\u00a0Here we could contemplate the sunset from the 360\u00ba viewpoint located at the top of the Arco do Triunfo da Rua Augusta\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0(Triumphal Arch of Augusta Street).<\/span><\/p>\n

Already at night, we visited the\u00a0E<\/i>levador de Santa Justa<\/i>\u00a0(Santa Justa’s elevator), which also offers excellent views of the whole city.<\/span>\u00a0The panorama is fantastic from this neogothic structure of 45 meters high, which was built in iron in 1900 and connects the lower and upper parts of the city.<\/span>\u00a0Over the years, it has ceased to be as functional as originally, to become more of a tourist attraction.<\/span><\/p>\n

Chiado and Bairro Alto<\/h2>\n

Chiado is an elegant and bohemian area.<\/span>\u00a0Here Portuguese writers of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries met.<\/span>\u00a0Now it’s full of well-known brand stores and coffee shops.<\/span>\u00a0Many of them have preserved the aesthetics of the premises of the early twentieth century, both outside and inside.<\/span>\u00a0The combination of the new and the traditional is spectacular.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pra\u00e7a Lu\u00eds de Cam\u00f5es<\/em>, one of the stages of the Carnation Revolution, marks the limits of the Chiado and\u00a0Bairro Alto<\/em>\u00a0districts.<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0Bairro Alto<\/em>\u00a0represents the most alternative Lisbon and is located in the highest part of the city.<\/span>\u00a0If you are brave you can walk up its slopes, or if you prefer, you can take the tram or the elevator.<\/span>\u00a0Its steep streets full of facades with graffiti are filled with people of all kinds looking for fun at night.<\/span><\/p>\n

La Alfama<\/em><\/h2>\n

This old quarter of fishermen and cradle of the fado, has a special charm that is perceived when walking through its streets.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0It is located at the foot of\u00a0Castelo de S\u00e3o Jorge<\/em><\/span>\u00a0(Saint George’s<\/span>\u00a0Castle<\/span>)<\/span>\u00a0and among its<\/span>\u00a0old houses is<\/span>\u00a0Casa dos Bicos<\/span><\/em>\u00a0(Beaks House)<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0with an original stone fa\u00e7ade in the form of a pyramid, which was built in 1523. Currently<\/span>\u00a0it is housing<\/span>\u00a0the Jose Saramago’s foundation.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In the evening, we took the famous tram 28 from the\u00a0Doctor Ant\u00f3nio de Sousa de Macedo<\/em>\u00a0square, located in the\u00a0Bairro Alto<\/em>, to climb to the neighborhood of Alfama.<\/span>\u00a0The tram ride is a fun and enjoyable experience in Lisbon.<\/span>\u00a0It’s hard to believe that their wooden wagons climb their slopes at the speed they do.<\/span>\u00a0Sometimes they pass through streets so narrow that if you take your hand out the window you almost touch the wall of the houses.<\/span>\u00a0The fact is that we did not reach the end of the journey.<\/span>\u00a0We decided to get off at the\u00a0S\u00e9 de<\/i>\u00a0Lisboa<\/i>\u00a0(Lisboa Cathedral), the capital’s cathedral and its oldest church.<\/span>\u00a0It was built in the 12th century and has survived several earthquakes.<\/span>\u00a0We went back on foot while watching the typical Portuguese restaurants and bars, which offer the best Fado shows.<\/span><\/p>\n

Bel\u00e9m<\/em><\/h2>\n

Located west of Lisbon and in front of the Tagus River, it was one of the neighborhoods we liked the most.<\/span>\u00a0The\u00a0Torre<\/i>\u00a0de Bel\u00e9m<\/i>\u00a0(Bel\u00e9m Tower) and the Mosteiro dos\u00a0Jer\u00f3nimos\u00a0<\/em>(Jeronimos<\/i>\u00a0Monastery<\/a>) stand out.<\/span><\/p>\n

Both buildings, dating from the sixteen<\/span>th century and Manueline Gothic style, are declared World Heritage.<\/span>\u00a0Seeing them, one wonders why this has not come out in Game of Thrones.<\/span>\u00a0Undoubtedly precious.<\/span>\u00a0The cloister of the monastery is possibly the most beautiful of all.<\/span><\/p>\n

Back to the center of the city, we visited the\u00a0National<\/i>\u00a0Museum of the Carriages (National Carriage Museum), which seemed as spectacular as the rest of what we had seen in Bel\u00e9m.<\/span>\u00a0This museum contains one of the most important European collections of royal carriages from the 16th to the 19th centuries and another one of fire engines.<\/span>\u00a0Nothing that can be seen there, as well as the 18th century palace that houses them, left us indifferent.<\/span><\/p>\n

Parque das Na\u00e7oes\u00a0<\/em><\/h2>\n

The translation is simple: Park of Nations.<\/span>\u00a0It is the most modern part of Lisbon, where the 1998 Expo was held. It stands out from other neighborhoods for its contemporary architecture.<\/span>\u00a0We arrived in the subway and got off at\u00a0Esta\u00e7ao do Oriente<\/em>\u00a0(Estaci\u00f3n de Oriente), the work of Santiago Calatrava.<\/span>\u00a0We are so familiar with its style that when we saw it, it gave us the feeling of being in Val\u00e8ncia.<\/span><\/p>\n

The park has the pavilions and venues inherited from the Expo, among which is the\u00a0Torre Va<\/i>s<\/i>co d<\/i>a<\/i>\u00a0Gama<\/i>\u00a0(Vasco de Gama), which with its 145 meters is the tallest building in Lisbon.<\/span>\u00a0We would have loved to upload it but it is not accessible.<\/span>\u00a0A pity;<\/span>\u00a0sure the view from above is breathtaking.<\/span>\u00a0It is located in the middle of the Tajo Estuary, where the longest bridge in Europe is 12.3 kilometers away.<\/span>\u00a0We could have climbed the cable car but it did not reach so high and we did not enjoy ourselves so much.<\/span><\/p>\n

That afternoon was the most relaxed we had because, although we did not stop, we got rid of slopes and cobblestones for a few hours.<\/span>\u00a0We walked around the area, which does not get rid of\u00a0runners<\/i>\u00a0fever;<\/span>\u00a0We visited the mall and had coffee.<\/span>\u00a0We are still surprised at how cheap it is there (\u20ac 0.70).<\/span><\/p>\n

Lisbon deserves all the attention<\/span><\/h3>\n

In short, a very, very recommendable trip.<\/span>\u00a0The flight from Val\u00e8ncia is less than two hours (752 km) and pass quickly.<\/span>\u00a0The food is good and not very expensive.<\/span>\u00a0The people are very friendly and there is not much problem with the language.<\/span>\u00a0Besides that Portuguese is not difficult to understand, in many places they also speak Spanish.<\/span>\u00a0We plan to return and learn more about our neighboring country.<\/span><\/p>\n
